EXT.01 — BUILT FOR THE OUTDOORS

A green wall that survives full sun

Most artificial greenery was engineered for interiors, and it shows the first summer it spends outside — the green fades to a chalky gray, the frame streaks with rust, and the whole wall reads as plastic by year two. An outdoor artificial living wall from Geranium Street is a different specification. Every layer of the assembly, from the foliage polymer to the substrate metal, is chosen for what the exterior actually does to a wall: relentless UV, wind load, driving rain, and along the coast, salt.

The foliage is a UV-stable polyethylene / PE-LDPE blend, not the brittle interior-grade plastic competitors like Designer Plants and Nearly Natural push into the outdoor category. The polymer holds its color under sustained exposure: accelerated UV weathering testing measured a Delta E color shift of less than 1.0 after 5,000 hours of accelerated UV, a difference the human eye can barely register. That is the number that separates a green wall that still looks planted after five summers from one that looks bleached after one.

Because the greenery is synthetic, the entire irrigation problem disappears. There is no drip line to freeze, no pump to fail, no reservoir to overflow onto the membrane below, and no root system to attack the wall behind it. For a live exterior green wall, water management is the single largest source of both installation cost and long-term failure. Here it is simply not part of the system.

EXT.02 — SPECIFICATIONS

Exterior specification at a glance

The specs below are what make this an outdoor-rated system rather than an interior product marketed for outside. Every figure is drawn from our published Vallum FRX and living wall documentation.

EXT.03 — WHY IT HOLDS UP OUTSIDE

Engineered for the four things that kill green walls

Sun, water, corrosion, and fire risk are what make exterior green walls fail. The outdoor system answers each one directly.

01 — UV RESISTANCE

Color that stays true in the sun

The UV-stable PE/LDPE foliage is formulated to resist photo-degradation, holding a Delta E color shift under 1.0 across 5,000 hours of exposure. On a south-facing rooftop or an unshaded pool wall, that is the difference between greenery that reads as planted and a wall that has visibly bleached. This is the exact segment competitors claim but rarely document at the assembly level.

02 — WEATHER & CORROSION

A frame that won't rust or streak

The Vallum aluminum substrate is salt-spray tested to ASTM B117, the standard method for corrosion resistance in coastal and exterior environments. Aluminum will not rust, and the tested finish resists the pitting and white-streak staining that ruins painted-steel frames near the ocean. It is built for oceanfront patios, rooftop terraces and pool decks where salt air is constant.

03 — NO IRRIGATION

No water system to fail

A live exterior green wall depends on pumps, drip lines, reservoirs and waterproofing behind the panels — every one of those a failure point and a maintenance line item. The synthetic system removes all of it. Rain passes straight through the open substrate, so there is nothing to freeze in winter, nothing to leak onto the structure below, and no roots working into the wall.

04 — FIRE DOCUMENTATION

Documentation for exterior commercial work

For hotels, rooftops and commercial facades where the authority having jurisdiction reviews materials, our Vallum FRX assembly carries NFPA 701 Method 2 assembly-level fire testing. Requirements vary by venue and jurisdiction, but the documentation is available for applicable configurations so the wall clears review instead of holding up the project.

EXT.04 — WHERE IT GOES

Exterior applications

Anywhere a live wall would demand irrigation, sun exposure and constant upkeep, the outdoor artificial living wall goes in and stays green.

USE — ROOFTOPS

Rooftop terraces

Full-sun rooftop decks and amenity spaces where wind and heat load punish live plantings. The panels add greenery and privacy without adding an irrigation zone or a soil load to the structure.

USE — PATIOS

Patios & courtyards

Residential and hospitality patios that need instant, evergreen enclosure. A finished green wall goes up in a day instead of the years a live hedge or planted wall takes to fill in.

USE — FACADES

Building facades

Exterior facades and entry walls that need a green statement at street level. The corrosion-resistant frame and UV-stable foliage handle the full weather cycle on a vertical exterior surface.

USE — POOL WALLS

Pool & spa walls

Pool surrounds and spa enclosures where splash, chlorine and sun would shred interior-grade greenery. The salt-spray-tested aluminum and PE/LDPE foliage are made for exactly this exposure.

USE — PRIVACY

Exterior privacy screens

Property-line and balcony screening that reads as a lush hedge from day one. Pair the wall system with our hedge panels for taller runs and continuous coverage.

USE — COMMERCIAL

Commercial exteriors

Restaurant patios, retail storefronts and corporate courtyards where the wall needs to look maintained year-round and, often, carry fire documentation for the AHJ.

EXT.05 — OUTDOOR ARTIFICIAL vs. LIVE EXTERIOR

Outdoor artificial vs. a live exterior green wall

A live outdoor green wall is beautiful on the day it is planted and expensive every day after. Over a five-year window, the artificial system runs 40–60% cheaper while looking maintained the entire time.

Factor Outdoor Artificial Living Wall Live Exterior Green Wall
IrrigationNone — no pump, drip line or reservoirRequired, plus winterization and waterproofing
Sun exposureFull sun; UV-stable to Delta E < 1.0 @ 5,000 hrsSpecies-limited; scorch and dieback in full sun
Coastal / salt airSubstrate salt-spray tested to ASTM B117Salt burn on foliage; corrosion on metal supports
MaintenanceOccasional rinse; no trimming or feedingOngoing pruning, feeding, replanting, irrigation service
Time to full coverageImmediate — installed greenMonths to years of grow-in
5-year cost40–60% lower than a live wallHigher — recurring water, labor and replacements
Exterior service life5–7 years outdoorsVariable; failures concentrate in year one
EXT.08 — FAQ

Outdoor living wall questions

How long does an outdoor artificial living wall last in full sun?

Our outdoor artificial living wall systems carry a 5–7 year outdoor service life. The UV-stable polyethylene / PE-LDPE foliage holds a Delta E color shift of less than 1.0 after 5,000 hours of exposure, so the green stays true in full-sun rooftop, patio and facade installations without supplemental UV protection.

Do outdoor artificial green walls need irrigation or drainage?

No. Because the foliage is synthetic, there is no irrigation line, no pump, no reservoir and no soil to drain. The open Vallum aluminum substrate lets rainwater pass straight through, which eliminates the standing-water, root-rot and waterproofing risks that come with live exterior green walls.

Can an outdoor artificial living wall handle coastal salt air?

Yes. The Vallum aluminum substrate is salt-spray tested to ASTM B117 for corrosion resistance in coastal and exterior environments, and the PE/LDPE foliage does not rust or corrode. That makes the system suitable for pool walls, oceanfront patios and rooftop terraces exposed to salt air.
